On Tuesday 11th April 2017, Central Bedfordshire Council’s award-winning independent living scheme, Priory View, was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen.

Her Majesty had the chance to speak with residents taking part in some of the numerous activities on offer and enjoying the many different facilities available at the Church Street development.

Unfortunately, Dunstable’s feral pigeon population also appreciated  the state of the art accommodation and promptly commenced roosting and nesting on the buildings balconies. This resulted in large amounts of bird guano being deposited on the balconies which whilst unsightly also posed a significant health risk to the building occupiers.

Professional Pest Management surveyor Steve Knox (B.Sc. Hons) was subsequently approached by Peter Joslin (Team Leader Routine Maintenance) of Central Bedfordshire Council and asked to propose a solution to prevent bird access to 16no. balconies.

On the 26th September, our team commenced with the installation of translucent, 50mm gauge, polypropelene netting to each of the 16no. balconies.

The netting was installed vertically and clipped to post tensioned 2mm steel cable secured to the building fabric.

Critically, the unobtrusive netting prevented the birds gaining access whilst also allowing continued use of the sliding sun louvers installed when the building was constructed. Additionally, the work was planned in a sequence  so as not to affect the day to day running of the Cafe and Costcutter shop at the front of the building.

On Friday 6th October the work was completed without injury or incident. Professional Pest Management – Professional work carried out safely, on time and on budget
