PPM Aircraft pest control
& the control of malarial vectors & other insects of public health
significance
A
serious problem is posed by the inadvertent transport of live mosquitoes
aboard aircraft arriving from tropical countries where vector borne
diseases are endemic.
Surveys at international airports have found many instances of live
insects, particularly mosquitoes, aboard aircraft arriving from countries
where malaria and arboviruses (e.g. Dengue Fever) are endemic.
A serious consequence of the transport of infected mosquitoes aboard
aircraft has been the numerous cases of “airport malaria”
reported from Europe, North America and elsewhere.
As such there is an important on-going need for the disinsection of
aircraft arriving from airports in tropical disease endemic areas into
non-endemic areas.
Such treatments are a mandatory requirement of the World Health Organisation
for aircraft operating on specific routes. Failure to demonstrate that
this requirement has been fulfilled may lead to temporary grounding
of the aircraft by Port Authorities. PPM has been administering aircraft
pest control and other such treatments on behalf of the airline industry
since 1998, currently working on a regular basis for household names
such as Thomson Airways Ltd., Gulfstream, Signature Flight Support,
Harrods Aviation and Titan Airways.
Regularly operating at all major UK ports our technicians are in possession
of airside passes and have undergone specialist training in the application
of insecticides approved for aircraft use. We operate nationwide
We are also experienced in:
- Biocide
Disinfections
-
Landside / Airside Pest Control – rats, mice, wasps, cockroaches,
ants etc.
-
Wasps, bees, mice, rats and fleas on aircraft / in hangers all dealt
with as well as other more exotic species of pest
Area
wise we have a nationwide coverage, but operate mainly throughout the
following areas: Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Luton,
Bedford, Milton Keynes, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Hitchin, Letchworth,
Flitwick, Ampthill, Toddington, Leighton Buzzard, Sandy and Biggleswade.

PPM
Water Hygiene & Sanitation in Aviation
Waterborne diseases that are still being transmitted in many parts of
the world include cholera, the enteric fevers (Salmonella), bacillary
and amoebic dysentery and other enteric infections. Many aircraft operate
through countries in which these diseases are either endemic or occur
from time to time, and in which the standard of sanitation may be low.
Whilst it is recommended that crews should aim to minimise the pick
up of water supplies from outside the UK, aircraft cannot always carry
sufficient water to last throughout the complete flight and may be compelled
to replenish water supplies from sources outside the UK.
If the water source is contaminated, it is clear that, unless adequate
precautions are taken, disease can be spread to aircraft users through
the medium of water.
PPM’s detailed operational procedures ensure compliance with World
Health Organisation recommendations in respect of ensuring water hygiene
& sanitation on board aircraft.
These procedures are then monitored by PPM via routinely sampling of
on-board water supplies which are routinely microbiologically &
chemically analysed at UK laboratories.
Area wise we have a nationwide coverage, but operate mainly throughout
the following areas: Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Luton,
Bedford, Milton Keynes, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Hitchin, Letchworth,
Flitwick, Ampthill, Toddington, Leighton Buzzard, Sandy and Biggleswade.
